A pharmaceutical company has successfully developed a cure for mutations. With the source being another mutant, dividing the mutant camps into one lead by the nationalist Magneto (Ian McKellen), who is convinced of mutant superiority and thus aims at global mutant domination and the extinction of the human race, and another lead by Charles Xavier (Patrick Stewart), advocating friendly relations and peaceful cooperation with the human race. As Jean Grey (Famke Janssen) rises from the dead as Dark Phoenix, many are forced to choose sides, and Wolverine (Hugh Jackman) is faced with the decision of saving the one woman he loves or saving everyone else from her.
Hugh Jackman portrays Logan aka. Wolverine, an unnaturally mutated cross between man and animal, distinguished by his adamantium claws and skeletal structure, making him virtually indestructible. In The Last Stand, as his one true love is resurrected from the dead with a new, darker alter ego, Wolverine finds himself faced with the most painful decision of his life.

Critical Reception:
Upon it's May 2006 release, X-Men: The Last Stand, though a commercial success, received largely mixed reviews and remains thus the least appreciated film of the X-Men-trilogy. While the CGI of the film was on numerous occasions admitted to be impressive, many professional critics felt that the film thus dispensed with character development and introduced too many new and unimportant characters, for which most blamed the new director, Brett Ratner. Out of 215 professional reviews listed at Rotten Tomatoes, 122 (57%) rated the film "fresh", with 93 reviews consequently rating the film "rotten", earning the film an overall "rotten" rating. At IMDb.com, user reviews have been less hard on the film, with it currently having a 7/10 star rating with around 60,000 votes in.
Extracts from professional reviews:
"But if this third installment is any indication, the franchise may have plunged too far into self-parody to ever fully recover. Brett Ratner (taking over from Bryan Singer) and screenwriters Simon Kinberg and Zak Penn, inspired by Marvel's comic books, have produced a slap-happy special-effects blitz stuffed with way too many characters, way too many clichés, way too many gaffes." - Amy Biancolli, Houston Chronicle
